Green Jackfruit Powder Lowering Blood Sugar in Diabetics

Ripe jackfruit is one of the sweetest fruits, but raw jackfruit turns out to be the defense for diabetes. James Joseph found interest in the topic, and had been doing the research about the properties of jackfruit. He worked together with two medical professionals from the Government Medical College at Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh.


The hemoglobin A1c test, also called HbA1c, glycated hemoglobin tests, and glycohemoglobin, indicates the average level of blood sugar over the past two to three months. Patients diagnosed with diabetes take the test regularly to check whether the blood level is within range.


James Joseph told Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) that it was in 2015 that he realized the properties of raw jackfruit. Then, in 2016, he researched and explored more about jackfruit with the help of his company, God’s Own Food Solutions. In the same year, he also set up a joint venture (JV) called Diet Fibre 365 company along with ME Meeran Foundation, the largest spice exporter in the country. Together, the JV manufactures green jackfruit flour as their product. One packet includes 200 grams of the green jackfruit flour.


Joseph claimed that his product has done wonders. When adding 30 grams of green jackfruit flour in the meal daily, most diabetics have shown a significant decrease in the level of blood sugar.


After the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) gave him approval, he carried on with his study to evaluate the effect of jackfruit365. He conducted the trial which included 40 people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: 24 men and 16 women. The mean age for the group was 46.20±9.12 years. During the trial, participants were given green jackfruit in their meal. Their mean HbA1c before the study was 7.23±0.47 per cent. However, 12 weeks after the study, their mean HbA1c decreased to 6.98±0.48 per cent.


Aside from the study, Mohandas Pai, Chairman of the Board of Manipal Global, also said that for the past two years, he has been taking a spoon of the flour in his breakfast porridge and in green tea after dinner daily. It has aided the control of his blood glucose level. Another 60-year-old man said he has been taking 90 units of insulin to control his blood sugar for five years. However, for the past two years, he has started to add the jackfruit flour to his meal daily, and after one year, he could stop taking insulin and take tablets instead. He said, “This saved me money, pain and embarrassment when having food outside.”
